Guide to the best resorts in The Cook Island

The Cook Islands, an unspoiled paradise in the South Pacific, is an explorers dream destination near the bottom of the world, surrounded by miles of ocean. The Cook Islands are a place where time seems to slow down allowing you to appreciate simple pleasures. You won’t find many state-of-the-art office buildings, mega-resorts, or signs promoting ultra fast broadband here. Instead, the charm of The Cook Islands can be found in the welcoming, genuine nature of the locals, and their authentic way of life.

Despite their allure, the Cook Islands have remained relatively off the grid, preserving the island’s natural beauty. This is partly due to their remote location, nestled between American Samoa and Tahiti, and the limited accessibility that has kept mass tourism at bay. Recently, airport developments have made these islands easier to reach from the USA.  Hawaiian Airlines now offers direct flights from Honolulu to Rarotonga, opening up this idyllic destination to more travelers from the Northern Hemisphere.

No trip to the Cook Islands is complete without a visit to Aitutaki. This island is one of the last frontiers for those seeking a classic remote island escape. With its tiny airport, a handful of quaint cafes, and a few locally owned resorts, Aitutaki is the perfect spot to hide away from the world. With a local population of less than 1,000, Aitutaki offers an intimate, sincere travel experience that is increasingly rare in today’s fast-paced world. We might be a little biased, as we love visiting Aitutaki, but we also think it has one of the best beaches in the world.

Whether you’re making friends with local pups, kitesurfing across crystal-clear lagoons, or indulging in the region’s delicacies, the Cook Islands promise a uniquely relaxing experience that’s hard to find anywhere else in the world.

While you’re unlikely to stumble upon a Four Seasons, or a Ritz Carlton in The Cook Islands, you will find an array of boutique, locally owned hotels and private villas with a focus on sustainable, warm hospitality. We’ve rounded up our favorite stays in the region below.

If you’d like a more detailed travel itinerary, read our guide, a 5-day trip to Aitutaki.

The Cook Island’s Best Resorts

The best luxury resort in the Cook Islands, Pacific Resort Aitutaki

1. Pacific Resort Aitutaki

Set between a tropical forest and the shores of Aitutaki lagoon, the Pacific Resort Aitutaki is a romantic property that boasts a beautiful white sand beach, strewn with big black rocks, tropical flora and palm trees.

The resort features just a handful of beachfront bungalows, suites, and villas, all beautifully appointed with a local blend of exotic wood furnishings. This creates a peaceful ambiance enhanced by panoramic views of Aitutaki’s world-famous lagoon.

The resort’s Rapae Bay Restaurant is renowned as the best on Aitutaki, serving up local dishes that are hard to beat. We loved their fresh catch with creamed rukau. And if you’re a fan of lying poolside with a cocktail in hand, this is your best choice—Aitutaki is so small that sometimes it can be hard to hunt down a good margarita, but this spot has you covered.

2. Aitutaki Lagoon Private Island Resort - Adults Only

The Aitutaki Lagoon Private Island Resort is home to the only overwater bungalows in the Cook Islands. This adults-only retreat offers a unique “barefoot luxury” experience. While it may not compare to the high-end overwater bungalows of Bora Bora and the Maldives, the breathtaking scenery and tranquil atmosphere more than make up for it.

The resort’s laid-back atmosphere and stunning lagoon views create a perfect setting for relaxation and romance. We loved biking around the island, through the trees marveling at the lagoon views. The friendly staff will go out of their way to make special occasions memorable here, so if you’re in town for a honeymoon or wedding make sure to tell the front desk.

The lagoon is home to some of the world’s best kite surfing, and the hotel is located in a prime position to watch kite surfers flying across the lagoon. Lessons can also be organized and are well worth your time.

The resort regularly hosts a range of cultural activities, guests can learn about the traditional art of tivaevae (patchwork quilting), a cherished local craft, and try their hand at making an Ei Katu, the traditional Cook Island’s version of a flower crown.

3. Little Polynesian Resort

Built with traditional Cook Islands architecture, The Little Polynesian Resort prides itself on being a relaxing, friendly resort offering unpretentious luxury. Located on one of Rarotonga’s finest beaches, the hotel has only ten overbeach ares (bungalows) and four Pia Tiare (Garden units).

Ares are built right into the natural setting of palm trees and tropical foliage, and have been designed with intricate attention to detail. A member of the “Small Luxury Hotels of The World”, this intimate resort stands out as one of the best places to stay on Rarotonga, the main island in The Cook Islands.

Their onsite restaurant is regularly in the running for the Cook Islands best restaurant, and you’ll find more restaurants and bars a short distance from the hotel. The resort often hosts traditional dance performances, giving guests a glimpse into the vibrant Cook Islands culture.

You’ll also find one of the island's highlights, “the fruits of rarotonga”, a snorkeling spot, just a small bike ride away.

The breakfast here is a tropical delight, featuring local fruits like breadfruit, starfruit, and delicious pawpaw.

The spacious interiors and stunning lagoon views provide a perfect backdrop for relaxation. This boutique property is perfect for laidback travelers looking to unwind and enjoy the natural beauty of Aitutaki in peace. Another stand out feature in each of the villas is the fully equipped kitchen allowing guests to dine in. This can be a significant benefit when the town gets busy, with restaurants quickly booking out.

The villas are located close to Maunga Pu, a scenic spot on the island with breathtaking views of the lagoon, ideal for a morning hike and sunrise picnic.

Breakfast is delivered daily to your villa, and all other meals can be either enjoyed at the resort’s restaurant or one of the many local restaurants just a short walk away.
